The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster final round of competition.

The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the win, repeating his sole prior tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win over the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai started the last day with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.

Fleetwood edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.

Playoff Decider

This set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, finishing one shot short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

Højgaard fired six birdies of his as well, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an superb last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
